Thousands of Dollars Raised for Hurricane Relief
at Annual "Alive After Five" Oyster Roast

Charlotte, NC, September 16, 2005 —  The 7th annual "Alive After Five" oyster roast at uptown Charlotte’s Mimosa Grill drew an enthusiast crowd of about one thousand people and raised just over $4,000 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.   That total includes cash donations plus a portion of the proceeds from beverage sales and a silent auction of sports memorabilia.  The money will be presented to the Salvation Army for its disaster relief efforts.

The Carolina Wellness Coalition, which was originally designated as the charity to benefit from the oyster roast, relinquished that role and its 80+ sponsors helped promote the fundraiser.  Other local businesses also volunteered to lend a hand to make sure this "Alive After Five" was a huge success.

Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory attended the event and addressed the crowd, encouraging everyone to donate generously.  When he learned of the total amount raised, he said, “Charlotte’s outpouring of support to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina has no bounds.  I commend the Carolina Wellness Coalition and Mimosa Grill on their highly successful Oyster Roast fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The fact that the Carolina Wellness Coalition was moved to give the proceeds of what was to be a fundraiser for their organization, but instead made it a benefit for the Hurricane victims, speaks volumes about how Charlotte is such a caring community.”

Mark Darvill, General Manager of Mimosa Grill, said, “It’s the most successful oyster roast we’ve ever had.  I attribute that in part to the fact that so many businesses joined us in our efforts to get the word out about the fundraiser and they tirelessly donated their time to help at the event.  Charlotteans responded in large numbers and gave generously.”
